Waterloo Amenities and Community Living

Waterloo is known for its high-quality living from its great environment and impressive town amenities.

This city is brought to life with youth as young people from across the globe are attracted to one of Ontario’s highest rated schools--University of Waterloo. This renowned university offers comprehensive technology courses, and many of its graduates fuel the tech industry in this area, making Waterloo a prosperous city.

The Waterloo area is known as Canada’s Silicon Valley, as many large tech-companies have brought offices to Waterloo and surrounding cities. Some influential companies include Electronic Arts, BlackBerry, Google, and Maplesoft.

Waterloo is a green city that offers its residents many parks and recreational facilities.

RIM Park is a massive indoor and outdoor sporting facility open to all residents. Go to tee-time at RIM Park’s 18-hole golf course, or play beach Volleyball at one of their four courts. There are also 12 multi-purpose indoor and outdoor fields and an ice-skating rink. For those who need medical attention, there’s a sports specific medical centre right in the park.

In uptown Waterloo, you can visit the city’s most loved park--Waterloo Park. This park is a serene place with many activities for the whole family. You can watch a show at the bandshell, visit the animal displays, and play in the waterpark. You can also experience Waterloo’s history by viewing historical buildings and a mill replica.

If you’re looking to have a fun night out, try one of Waterloo’s many craft breweries. Abe Erb Brewing Company has a unique, industrial vibe, perfect for nights out with friends. You can talk over premium ales and lagers while live music fills the air.

Innocente Brewing Company is a brewery that opened in 2014 and is a great place if you’re looking for high-quality drinks. They’ve won gold awards for their double IPA’s, German-style pilsners, and charcoal porters. You definitely don’t want to miss this brewery!

Alongside all the craft breweries, Waterloo has a diverse range of restaurants that cater to every palate, including:

  • Lancaster Smokehouse
  • The Bauer Kitchen
  • Sole Restaurant and Wine Bar
  • Bhima's Warung

Waterloo's Rich History

Waterloo is located right next to Kitchener, Ontario, so the cities are oftentimes joined and referred to as Kitchener-Waterloo, or the “twin cities.” The nearby city of Cambridge is also grouped in with these two cities to be nicknamed the “tri-cities.” Each city, though, has its own separate government.

There have been several attempts over the years to combine the two cities of Waterloo and Kitchener (sometimes along with Cambridge), to become one large city, but motions to do this have never been successful.

Waterloo, though, has a rich history on its own. In 1804, the first wave of immigrants came to populate the city. They were Mennonites from Pennsylvania, and they developed the sawmill and gristmill industry that defined the area for over 100 years.

In the 1840s, German immigrants began populating the area and influencing the culture. Now, we see much of this German heritage commemorated in Waterloo, especially with the Oktoberfest celebrations that occur every October.
