Guelph's Vibrant History

Founded in 1827, Guelph is full of history. The name Guelph comes from the Bavarian-Germanic word, Welf, and is a reference to the reigning British monarch at the time—King George IV. His family was from the house of Hanover, specifically a younger branch named the House of Welf. This is the reason why the city is nicknamed “The Royal City.”

Originally, a popular Scottish novelist named John Galt designed the layout of the streets to resemble a typical European city—with broad main streets, and narrow side streets, and squares. The city was built with a grid pattern, which was a popular style at the time of the city’s construction.

Now, we still see the European influence down the streets of Guelph, from the size of the streets, to the style of the architecture.

Guelph Community Amenities

Guelph is a perfect city for growing families as there are plenty of amenities and activities available. The city is filled with parks where residents like to spend time outdoors and have picnics.

Riverside Park is a great park for a sunday getaway. There are gorgeous flower displays in the spring and summer months, and a miniature train that takes you around the park. You can also go for a walk or a run along one of the many wooded trails. In the winter, the park is open to skaters and cross-country skiers.

Rockwood Conservation Area is another great local getaway where visitors can camp, fish, and swim. At this park, you can find tons of wildlife, like deer, wild turkeys, and beavers.

The University of Guelph attracts young people from across the world for its renowned programs in horticulture and veterinary medicine. The university has a major presence in Guelph and enlivens the city with youth.
