Waterloo's Rich History
Waterloo is located right next to Kitchener, Ontario, so the cities are oftentimes joined and referred to as Kitchener-Waterloo, or the “twin cities.” The nearby city of Cambridge is also grouped in with these two cities to be nicknamed the “tri-cities.” Each city, though, has its own separate government.
There have been several attempts over the years to combine the two cities of Waterloo and Kitchener (sometimes along with Cambridge), to become one large city, but motions to do this have never been successful.
Waterloo, though, has a rich history on its own. In 1804, the first wave of immigrants came to populate the city. They were Mennonites from Pennsylvania, and they developed the sawmill and gristmill industry that defined the area for over 100 years.
In the 1840s, German immigrants began populating the area and influencing the culture. Now, we see much of this German heritage commemorated in Waterloo, especially with the Oktoberfest celebrations that occur every October.
